Are you my mother?

When looking at today's baby dinosaur drawings, I'm reminded of the book, "Are you my mother?" We used foreshortened circles to draw an egg that had been cracked opened by our baby T-Rex.

Most of this class has never drawn a foreshortened square. The Club House Artists learned how to use their guide dots to start their foreshortened square and they turned it into a stone. They also learned about "size", another tool box word. They also created a Flintstone inspired drawing. To demonstarte size, we drew a large dinosaur that took up most of the page. Then we drew a much smaller dinosaur behind our large one creating a sense of space.

Some super awesome dinos Club House Artists!

StoneAge Dinos

The Club House Artists learned a new tool box word tonight. They learned how "size" can help they drawings have depth which creates 3D space. We decided to go with a dinosaur theme and tried drawing a baby dinosaur hatching from it's egg as a warm up. Then we discussed how to use size in a drawing. We drew a dinosaur right in front of us and made him take up the whole page and then drew a dinosaur much smaller behind him to make him look further away. We created a "Flintstone" world with our dinosaurs so we could also practice our forshorten squares and cubes. (Don't forget to click on the drawings to enlarge them.)

A Salute to our Club House Artists

A couple of our Club House Artists are on vacation visiting a tropical paradise. We decided to pretend we were there too with our pina coladas and coconuts. The Club House Artists learned about overlapping to help make their still life more interesting and 3D!

Then we also jumped into Super Mario Land and drew our own version. The Club House Artists had a lot of fun with this project. They loved adding all the characters and 1 UPS!

Pipe Dreams

Our 6's gained another 6 to the group this week. Boy, she didn't miss a beat with this group! We kept telling her throughout the class that by her drawings it seems like she's been with us since the beginning.

A previous student wanted to draw Super Mario Bros. after a class on foreshortened circles. I had him do it for homework since we didn't get a chance to in class. When thinking about introducing foreshortened circles to new students I decided that we would finally do our version of Super Mario Bros. It worked perfectly for our new students to grasp the idea. We had a lot of fun creating our version of Mario land. Enjoy! (Click to enlarge drawings)

A new session

The first class is always the best in each session. I love the transformation from their test drawings to the two drawings they complete in class. The parents have this look of shock on their face when they see how their son/daughter's drawings look so real. This group was no different and just as talented. We introduced foreshortened circles to the group by learning how to draw a hat box for grandma. Grandma would be proud.
(Click on the image to enlarge.)

Grandma enjoyed her hat box, but was quite surprised to see a frog popping out of the candy caudrin on Halloween! Eeeeek!

Check out the extras and details the Club House Artists added to their frog in the caudrin drawings. J added the frog's and the bird's shadows. T wanted to make sure her frog had it's last supper before. . .well, you know. Great job Club House Artists and Happy Halloween!

Halloween Still Lifes

My six's tried something different tonight. Since they've had about ten sessions I thought they could tackle drawing from an object. They've learned by now that every object can be broken down into simple shapes. So I tested them. Here's the two still life objects. The mouse in the mug (my favorite!) and the frogs in the cauldrin.

There are several challenges still with shading. One, shading with the sides of their pencils and two, shading from light to dark.

We also talked about the importance of "Overlapping" another tool box word. We made sure the handles on our mugs were overlapping the side of the mug to make it look more 3D!  (Don't forget to click on the artwork to see a larger version.)

The Club House Artists did a fantastic job with the still life drawings. Way to go girls!

Arrgh, where's me treasure?

Arrgh, where's me treasure? There it is in the deep blue ocean. I'll put me fins on and take a dive.

The Club House Artists started session two with a treasure hunt. We drew our treasure maps and then the treasure! They enjoyed adding all the extras and details to these drawings. We even included a baby clown fish named Zebe with his Mommy. Did you see the artists dive into their treasure boxes? Only their legs and fins were sticking out because they were so excited.

Drawing with a Magic Hat

For the last class of the first session we drew a magic hat for our warm up drawing. We stole Mickey's Sorcerer hat so we could draw our very best. The Club House Artists have been fantastic as we've travelled through their imaginations creating all of these great pieces of artwork. I hope to see them again in future sessions.
